Janet’s Astoria Cake (Red)

½ cup shortening
1 tsp soda
1 ½ cup sugar or 6 oz. Honey
1 tsp salt
2 eggs
1 tsp vanilla
1/4 cup (2oz) red food coloring
1 cup buttermilk
2 Tbsp vinegar
2 tsp cocoa
2 1/4 cups flour

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Cream shortening, sugar, eggs. Make paste of food coloring and cocoa. Add creamed mixture. Sift flour and salt. Add alternately to first mixture with buttermilk and vanilla. Stir in vinegar and soda, but do not beat. Bake 30 minutes and cool. Icing: Mix 1 cup milk, pinch of salt, and 3 Tbsp flour. Cook 5-7 min. stirring until thick. Chill. Cream 1 cup butter or 1 tsp butter flavor and 1 cup sugar for 7 min. Add to first mixture and beat until fluffy (5 min.)
